xx - filling with few notes

(From Logan Intl. airport)

London, more precisely South-London, promotes a new indie electro/rock band.
For what is worth, the self-entitled first album of the band has been highly considered by many music publications and end of year reviews. Pitchfork, for example, placed it at the 3rd place of their "albums of the year" list (http://pitchfork.com/features/staff-lists/7744-the-top-50-albums-of-2009/5/).
Although the music is simple and "down" to the basics, the rhythm is extremely catchy and laudable. I have always been convinced that some of the catchiest riffs in rock are pretty simple, so simplification doesn't mean mediocrity. Quite another thing, it is probably more complicated to make something interesting out of few notes/instruments.
Anyway, the style is somehow fresh, new and successfully manages to combine some traditional rock/post-punk with dance music. I like their voices and the way they continuously inter-exchange, how they come out together, while using some bass lines or simple arrangements as only filling. There is enough space for silence and echo-back, which recalls some of the best low-fi of the '80s.
The album itself is produced by the band and most of the songs are co-written by the duo Oliver Sim and Romy Madley Croft. Another very young band, they've done an excellent job.

Can't believe some people still complain that there are not enough new good bands/music out.....where do they look? MTV? 2009 has not been 2008, but was pretty good.

Thom Yorke & Co. in the Basement

Hopefully one day guys I will see you live

Camera Obscura - Scottish indie-pop

Camera Obscura - an indie-pop band from Scotland - are out in 2009 with their forth work entitled " My Maudlin Career".
After more than a decade of music, they finally managed to break through the UK and US charts with this last release ; the music is a pleasant journey through ordinary pains in love and life pictured with naivety and cute tenderness. They remind me some other good Scottish bands, such as "The Delgados", with their easy-listening melancholic tracks. This time hope is just around the corner. I enjoyed listening to it.

First single out:

Power to guitars

!Rock!
Belfast band "And so I watch you from afar" delivers an exciting instrumental album. Guitars lead the scene during a satisfying experience characterized by well-played guitar virtuousness, supported by a solid and persuasive bass & drums line. The music is loud and aggressive, but it offers some breaks here and there.

The album is ambitious and to me it is a success. Well done to the Belfast boys - it was a while since my last listening to a good guitar-hero record! it's not just a show-off of technical skill, the album flows well providing often changes in rhythm, making the album well-worth a listen and avoiding much of the obvious.

A sample, but there's not much on you-tube:

Talking about ghosts: Skip

Alexander "Skip" Spence was the Jefferson Airplane's drummer in their first album "Take Off", dated back in 1966.
A take off for JA, but a hard landing for Skipe that after the record never reappeared with JA. He left to found "Moby Grape" and thereafter lost himself in a sad journey to destruction, featuring drug addiction and alcoholism, which brought him far away from the music industry and from the recognition that his immense talent would have deserved.

A discontinuous genius, he left us with a solo album entitled "Oar". JA dedicated him a song in the notorious "Surrelastic Pillow" record, called "My best Friend", and many late contributions include artists such as Robert Plant, Tom Waits and Beck.

Another lost phantom in the history of music.

Before Ramona Falls...

...”Menomena”.

It looks like every band that integrates the music talent of Brent Knopf produces something extremely special. His music is some of the best music I have heard in 2009 - no doubts.

After enjoying Knopf’s side project Ramona Falls, I decided to explore his past and get a taste of the earlier works with his main occupation: Menomena. I found a different sound characterized by the same inescapable outcome: excellent music. Melodic but adventurous, it inherits a great deal from the ‘60, but it also offers something new through the intensive use of new technologies and a more modern sound.

The band formed back in 2000 and since then has released three full-length albums:

I Am the Fun Blame Monster! “ (2004), Under an Hour (2005), Friend and Foe (2007).

Here are some samples, hope you’ll enjoy it as much as me:

I keep wondering how is possible that Portland continues to deliver some of the best musicians around, seems like it has become the temple of indie rock as much as Seattle was it for grunge. Might be a good reason to go for a visit. For the meantime I listen to Menomena.

Would be a crime to stop here.

New Grizzly Bear Video

Grizzly Bear have recently released their new single "Ready, Able" from their latest album Veckatimest (2009).

I feel like I never really have enough of this wonderful band. It's clear from these latest singles, that their sound has become more accessible, simpler and probably it will help them to reach out more people than they did with “Yellow House”.
But as long as they'll continue to provide their work whit such elegance and skills, I'll be fine with it!

If you lost the release of the second single, here is the chance to catch up:

Scottish indie rock

If we want Scottish indie rock to reflect some of the emotions that the Scottish landscape provokes when we visit Scotland, then "The Twilight Sad" are doing a pretty good job in their second full-length album “ Forget the night ahead” (2009).

Their music is melancholic, dark but also powerful and colorful. It’s characterized by the beautiful and deep voice of James Graham, which perfectly cohabits with the wall of sound produced by strings, piano and the endless round of noisy guitars. The album is also elegant, although not all tracks in my opinion share the same level of intensity and beauty.

“I Became a Prostitute” is the first single out - very boring video, but good track:

The Starlight Mints - Submarine #3

Young musicians from California: Avi Buffalo.

I just went through the new songs of an interesting new sub-pop band from California, called "Avi Buffalo". I think they're well worth while a listen, and would suggest to start off with what probably is going to be their first forthcoming single, "What's in it for":
http://www.myspace.com/avibuffalo

Their first album should be out at the beginning of 2010. The songs heard transpire everything that youthfulness on easy street should be about...love, lightheartedness and true emotions.
These guys are probably finding themselves on a stage bigger than what they could have ever imagined to be on, already playing along "Beach House".

Good luck guys, u seem promising!

Meet them at the laundry:

New video for Ramona Falls

Following up on Ramona falls, this is the newly released video from "Intuit" entitled "I Say Fever".

To me, one of the best record that came out recently. I like the video as well, brilliant.

For Gigi: relax after exams

As requested, please find relax in Nouvelle Vague and their bossa covers of new wave classics from 80's.
Here is a cover of The Cure, but you will be able to find also Depeche Mode, Echo and the Bunnymen, The Clash, Violent Femmes, Blondie, etc.

Modest Mouse by H.Ledger

Heath Ledger, just before his death, shot this music video for “King Rat”, one of the singles included in the last “Modest Mouse” record entitled “ No one’s first and you’re next”.

Modest Mouse, now at their sixth release, is probably one of the most famous and well-recognized indie-rock bands in the US. Another good record, this time with a special signature gifting us with a provocative music video.

The video premiered in August 2009:

A beautiful Indie project: Ramona Falls

I dig once, and I find nothing.

I dig again, and I find something interesting.

I continue digging and I finally come across something worth it. I take possession of the record. I listen to it, feeling satisfied.

There are times instead, when I find something that I consider special. Something that makes me feel happy. I can go to sleep with a big smile on my face. Today, I probably found what I was looking for the last three nights, while I am in the middle of mid-term exams and should probably research something regarding my two hundred papers. But hey! it doesn’t matter! I got what I wanted. Something special.

And if I don't share it, I can't fully enjoy it.

Ramona Falls!

I have listen to the record without even knowing who they were, without reading any review, cause I don't want them to influence my judgment. Just my ears and a couple of cold beers. 1st track brilliant, 2nd also…who are these guys??

After I finished to listen twice to all the record, I have decided that it was the right time to google them. Ramona Falls is the project of Brent Knopf, the mastermind of the indie band “Menomena”, together with the collaboration of more than 35 Portland-area indie musicians. And it's a beautiful piece of work.

I honestly don't want to bore you with my mental masturbation regarding the music sounds and how great this album is. There is enough stuff like this on the web, and tonight I don't fell the need to add anything more.

Just take a break. Stop. Listen to the music, let it flow…it’s a beautiful album. After “Devotion” by Beach House, it's probably the record I am currently enjoying the most. It makes me want to dig again and again.

Hope you're enjoying it out there
