The best way to continue the discussion on The Dodos is to watch the video here below first. This is "Men" form their first, self-released, album: "Beware of the Maniacs".
I consider both Fables and Men great songs but I also think that are songs such as "Men", "Jodi", Paint the Rust" or "The season" that made The Dodos one of the most inspiring indie-rock-folk (or however you want to define them) of 2008. These songs represent to me what The Dodos are all about: rhythmic force.
On this point it is worth to mention here a very good point that Scaruffi made in his review of The Dodos' second album, "Visiter". "The songs always contain some degree of verve and chaos, but neither ever gets out of control. Which is a pity". If this is true for Visiter (and I almost agree with scaruffi) what about "Time to die". Verve and chaos are not the two words that come to your mind when you listen to it.
However, despite my minor concerns about Time to die, I still love their music and I strongly suggest you all to go and see them live. I went to their gig few weeks ago here in London and it has been an incredible experience. They will play again in London on the 15th November and in Rome on the 8th December. Don't miss it.

Perhaps...like many bands after their first attempt. And it is indeed a pity.
ReplyDeleteI am curious to see how these new songs will blend with the older ones in a live context.
I think we should ask ouselves: "Is it still great music?"
And the answer, at lest for me, is: "Yes, no doubts". Hopefully they will give us something more intuitive and chaotic in the next album.
